Maketoys Quantron : Sonic Drill ( Not Nosecone )

Hello again, I will continue on my Maketoys Quantron review with Sonic Drill ( Not Nosecone ). In the G1 series, Nosecone was the first to be built by Grimlock inside Unicron's head. He transforms in to a driller with heavy plated armor. Nosecone is a perfectionist, and takes his time to think and act so that the task given to him can be completed without any issues. While he is not the quickest Autobot, you can count on him to get the job done. He forms the leg for Computron.

Here are some pictures I've taken from the internet.

G1's Nosecone robot design is simple and not bulky, has a nice clean look.

Nosecone's first task given by Grimlock, well, is to drill a hole of course!

Here he is out of the plastic prison. Initially I did not notice it, but then I realized that they put his lower limbs in the opposite direction. I was stuck in his transformation for the longest time but I'm not sure how I finally manage to transform him anyway before I notice the issue LOL.

Initially it was like this.....

Then I took them off and exchange it, problem solved.

OK, here he is with his corrected self. I must admit that Initially I did not find him very Interesting when I purchase the lot, I went straight to Blindfire and Celeritas, then Overheat. Played with Metal storm for a while then I move on to him last. I am not sure why, but he didn't really attract my attention initially, but after I've fiddle around with him, I do find him very interesting and he does comes with few surprises. So at a glance, he does have nice body and limbs ratio, paint job again is nicely done and same good quality plastic. Design wise is not really G1 Nosecone, but they are good improvements and does not stray too far from the G1 idea.

From the side view, we can see there are some overhanging parts from the head of the drill at the back, not a big issue.

Back view looks a little complicated as well. Not a clean look, but I guess the drill has to go somewhere.

Here we take a closer look at his head sculpt. He has a really interesting head sculpt with a Dragon ball-like scouter, which I think its very rare in the Transformers world.

Similar to this one.

Side view of Sonic Drill's head. Great details and color for the head, really like it.

HE has a ball joint head which rotates a full 360 degrees.

He can't really look up as the upward movement of his neck is hindered by how his head is attached to the ball joint.

He can look down

Shoulder is also similar to his other counterpart, they are on a ball and hinge joint.

Shoulders can rotate a full 360 degrees.

His elbow is on a ball and hinge joint, allowing some good internal rotations and elbow flexion. You will also notice his hands are holding his weapons in a reversed position, which I think its kinda cool. The weapons are fixed on his forearm.

Elbow flexion can go all the way

You can rotate his weapons up to 180 degrees and making it a very sneaky weapon. If he is cornered and asked to raise his hands to surrender, he can raise his hands, rotates him weapons and BAM!

He does not have any individual articulating fingers. His hand is in a fixed position, however, the hand does rotate as a whole.

There is a hinge joint on his back which allows some forward flexion movements, and this allows him to do multiple, better poses at your will.

Some side view. He can bow forward without moving his hip joints.

He can bend all the way down if you like.

Does have a full 360 degrees waist rotation on a swivel joint.

Abduction of his hips allows him to do a perfect split.

Can do the anterior split as well.

There are 2 parts on his lower limbs which allows him to rotate his thighs and knees.
This is at the thigh region.

This rotation occurs at the hinge joint on his knee.

Knee joints are on a hinge joint which folds onto itself allowing him to do the kneeling pose.

His feet does not really tilt upwards but does tilt down fairly well.

Some side tilting.

He does have some hidden armaments at his shoulders. Kind of like the Doctor Octopus arms. It is a very well hidden weapon or extra limbs to help him defeat his enemies.

Closer look at his claws or extra limbs.

The head of the drill can be detach and fixed on his arm as a weapon.
It does not really tab onto anything securely, but just enough to hold it in place.

Now we will have a look at his alternate mode. A Driller!

As a whole, the design is quite good, transformation is moderate difficulty. The tank-like tracks does not roll, but the drill at the front itself does spin nicely. There are multiple tabs to hold the alternate mode together but some of them do not tab firmly all the way and there are some space between them

Side view looks good too. The weapons that are initially on his forearm are now at either side of his alternate mode.

Back view.

Close up.

Side by side with Celeritas.

The 2 parts that are suppose to attach on the back of his alternate mode is a bit loose on mine. They do not attach firmly. Not sure whether other collectors have the same issue.

His articulation is the best among all the Quantron team members, which makes him very fun to pose with.

Poses, poses, poses.

All for one and one for all!

Here we can see G1 nosecone toy. (picture taken from internet) He looks bulkier in his G1 toy, but 30 years of improvement in engineering really makes figures these days look so awesome.

As a summary, Sonic drill is fun to play with with his multiple choice of armaments, excellent articulations and stability. Multiple tabs are required to hold him in place in his driller mode, with some not tabbing in well is a bummer. The back pack does not really sit well at the back and view from the side and back is not really pleasant. He is still fun to fiddle with nonetheless.

Thank you for reading!
